Welcome to PHRARS
A new radio society for beginners, amateurs and professionals.
The aims of the Society are to further the interests of its members, non members and wider community in all aspects of Amateur radio, Science, Engineering and Technology together with directly associated activities.
PHRARS is here to support already established local & regional Amateur Radio clubs and groups and Societies.
PHRARS is self funded and at times receives sponsorship and support from National and International Professional institutions and organizations.
Membership
Membership is absolutely voluntary but by joining, this will help (PHRARS) to develop and organize academic and educational programmes, events for a better engagement of the Wider Community into Science, Engineering and Technology (SET). Although initial membership fees were specified, this is no longer necessary as funds have been available from sponsors. Membership is free.
Professional support
Following on from the keen interest and work carried out by a team of dedicated academics of Engineering Professionals at Peterborough Regional College on various projects in amateur radio, highlighted the necessity to escalate the work - the team set out to form their own club – PRC & IET Peterborough & Huntingdon Network Amateur Radio Club(PRC & IET P&H NARC) lead by Project Development Manager – Moshin Dharas (Callsign: G1ZHL)
To promote amateur Radio, projects developed at Peterborough Regional College such as communications with Amateur Radio Satellites (OSCAR) and Amateur Radio stations in general – indentified to a wider community the importance of Radio and Satellite communications as well as future communications with the Astronauts on board International Space Station (ISS).
Promoting SET from Sponsorship
Due to the limitations of the Radio systems and equipment available at Peterborough Regional College, project development manager - also a member and volunteer for the Institution of Engineering Technology (IET) (Peterborough & Huntingdon Network)
(IET P&H Network) put a proposal to the IET P&H Network for support and sponsorship for the purchase of a dedicated Amateur Radio Station (ARS). The availability and use of such equipment would undoubtl support the work of the IET and promoting SET.
The sponsorship and support was granted by IET P&H Network with funds available to setup an ARS which included an Amateur Radio License and a Special Club Callsign issued by Ofcom M0PEC/GB2PRC.
Academics, appointed officials for M0PEC/GB2PRC and Radio Amateurs - John Nash and Roger King of the PRC & IET P&H Network Amateur Radio Club have helped extensively; supporting both the Amateur Radio Club at Peterborough Regional College and PHRARS.
With further developments taking place and support received the PRC & IET P&H Network Amateur Radio – the Project Development Manager set out on a very highly ambitious project which developed into PHRARS.
Funding and Support
PHRARS has also injected funds to support the PRC amateur radio club station to purchase - Microprocessor controlled antenna rotator unit/project kit as well as dedicated amateur radio test equipment.
Peterborough Regional College has also donated to the Amateur Radio Station at the College – Pentium 4 Personal computer systems which are being used to track and log the ISS and other amateur radio Satellites such as OSCAR.
The project development manager, officials and other colleagues within the PHRARS and PRC & IET P & H Network A.R.C have very strong educational and professional backgrounds and would like to excel work in Radio Communications from a hobbyist to much beyond in the main - inspire the wider community - 'Amateur Radio for everyone!'
Engage and Promote
PHRARS shall Endeavour its ambitions to promote amateur radio as not just a hobby nor a volunteer service—it can lead to professional engagement in various fields of employment from young apprenticeship programmes to scientific roles.
PHRARS supports PRC ARC to achieve and maximize local and regional community engagement not only in Amateur Radio but in Science Engineering and Technology (SET).
Additional Sponsors
IET P&H network has recently, sponsored PRC ARC with the purchase of amateur radio and Antenna equipment—so to set up a station. One of the first major projects lead by the Project Development Manager is, to utilise the amateur radio station and to communicate with Astronauts on board the International Space Station and to involve School Children to Adults in raising questions to the Astronauts via Amateur Radio on Board the International Space Station (ARISS) relating to SET.
